Don't toughen initiative process

Published in "The Oregonian".

Regarding "Reform Oregon's initiative system" (Jan. 16) making it harder to get initiatives on the ballot in Oregon is a bad solution to a problem that doesn't exist. It is insulting to the citizens of Oregon to assume that they are not smart enough to deal with multiple issues on the ballot.

Elected politicians in the legislature deal with many more issues than could ever be put on the ballot. Clearly, from past performance, the citizens are smarter than the politicians.

The only reform needed for the initiative process is to elect a secretary of state that will deal fairly with initiatives and, especially, title them honestly. When I am elected, I will do just that.
